Google Docs and PDF: Convert Text, Edit and Download

Choose the direction before converting

Use Google Docs when you want to revise wording with its document editor. If you only need to read a file or search its existing text, open PDF Reader; there is no need to turn the pages into a new document.

A Google Drive conversion uploads the source into Google's service. AdaPDF's local PDF text and OCR tools process the file in your browser. Choose the workflow that fits how you are allowed to handle the document.

Open a PDF as an editable Google document

On a computer, upload your PDF to Google Drive. Select the file, choose Open with, then Google Docs. Keep the original PDF so you can compare the recovered content with its pages.

Review headings, paragraph order, tables, columns, footnotes and page breaks. A readable PDF is not always a well-structured text document. If a conversion changes an important table or diagram, rebuild that part in the editor or keep it as a separate image.

For a local starting point, convert the PDF to Word, download the DOCX and then open that file in your preferred editor. AdaPDF's current conversion focuses on editable text; it does not recreate the original complex page layout.

Recognize words in a scanned PDF

A scan can look like text while containing only a picture. Google's guidance for its text-conversion workflow recommends files of 2 MB or less, upright text at least 10 pixels high and a clear image. This is guidance for conversion quality, not a general Google Drive upload limit.

After opening the scan with Google Docs, compare names, dates, amounts and punctuation against the image. Lists, tables, columns and footnotes may not be reconstructed accurately. If words are blurry or cut off in the source, recognition cannot restore information that is missing.

If you want to keep the original page appearance and add a searchable text layer, use OCR PDF first. To change only page orientation, rotate the PDF before recognition. Use the correct document language and proofread the result.

Download Google Docs as PDF

In a Google document on a computer, choose File → Download → PDF Document. Open the downloaded file and check the first page, final page, page count and any wide tables or pictures.

For a large document that does not download as expected, Google's help offers File → Print and then Save as PDF as an alternative. The wording and destination controls depend on your browser and operating system. Saving to a cloud drive and saving a local PDF are different destinations.

A PDF export is a copy, so you can keep editing the Google document afterward. If you need to correct the wording, change the source document and export a fresh copy rather than layering several PDF edits over an older version.

Fix unexpected pages, margins or wide tables

A pageless Google document can be printed, but pictures and wide tables may be resized. Content left from a previous pages layout, such as headers, footers or watermarks, may still appear when printed even when it is not visible in pageless mode.

For a page-sensitive handout, switch to a pages layout, check page size and margins, and review the print preview before saving. If your PDF is already finished and only its paper size needs to change, use Resize PDF. If an upload form rejects its file size, use Compress PDF instead.

Try the text and scan examples

The downloadable examples contain the same fictional two-page meeting summary: one PDF has selectable text and the other is made from page images. Try selecting words in each file before choosing a conversion path.

Use the source pages to check names, numbers and reading order after a conversion. These are practice inputs; they are not presented as Google Docs conversion results. Do not replace a real original with a converted copy until you have compared both.
