How to edit a PDF on Mac without Adobe Acrobat

A PDF is designed to keep a page looking the same, so changing it is different from editing a Word document. First decide whether you are adding a note, signature, highlight, or text box; changing visible wording; or reorganizing pages. That decision avoids spending time in the wrong tool.

For a short annotation, Preview is a convenient option already on your Mac. To add text to a PDF on your Mac in a browser, open AdaPDF’s editor: you can place a text box, change its font and size, and move it before saving. If you only need to add a visible signature, start with the signing tool instead. Keep your original file so you can compare the downloaded copy.

Use Preview to add text to a PDF on Mac

Open the PDF in Preview, choose the Markup toolbar, then add text, shapes, highlights, or a signature. Preview is particularly handy for a one-off comment, an arrow on a proof, or a visible signature. Save a duplicate when the original matters.

Preview’s markup tools add material over the PDF page; they do not turn the original PDF text into an editable document. If the wording itself must change, make a visual replacement in an editor and inspect the exported page carefully, especially around fonts, spacing, and line breaks.

Open Edit PDF, click Choose PDF, and select your file from the Mac file picker. Choose Add text to type on the page, or use a note or highlight to mark a passage. Select a new object to adjust its wording, size, and position. Click Save edited PDF, inspect the output preview, and download the copy before closing the tab; individual edits and undo history are available only during this session.

For a scanned page, OCR can help identify printed words before a visual replacement. An edited OCR page is rebuilt as an image in the exported PDF, so it can lose selectable text, links, forms, and bookmarks. That is often fine for a simple correction, but inspect the complete page at normal reading size. Keep the source PDF if those features or a certificate-based signature must remain untouched.

If you only need to make a scanned PDF searchable, use OCR PDF rather than replacing words visually. For longer rewrites, extract the PDF text into Word and rebuild the document there; complex layouts need adjustment. A visual cover-up in the editing workflow is not secure redaction.
